Nutrients like taurine, omega 3, calcium, and vitamin D help safeguard against the disease research completed on many participants aged 65 and over. But, researchers may compare the results to other age groups. Sardine consumption also enhances other health variables, such as cholesterol regulation, triglyceride, and blood pressure reduction.

The health advantages of sardines and fatty fish are frequently understood: their high levels of unsaturated fats help regulate cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular ailments. On the other hand, the advantages do not end there. A study headed by Diana Diaz Rizzolo, lecturer, and researcher at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya’s (UOC) College of Health Sciences along with the August Pi I Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), has found that the normal consumption of sardines helps to stop the onset of type two diabetes. Nutrients found in large levels in sardines – including taurine, omega 3, vitamin and calcium D – aid to protect against the disease that, based on CIBERDEM’s Diabetes research, affects approximately 14% of the Spanish population within age 18.

“Not only are sardines reasonably priced and simple to locate, but they’re secure and help to avoid the onset of type two diabetes. That is a very big scientific breakthrough. It’s not difficult to advocate this food through medical check-ups, and the people widely accept it”, clarified Diana D. Rizzolo.

Researchers in the Diabetes and Obesity Research Laboratory and the Primary Care Research Group, both by IDIBAPS; the IMIM, the Fatty Acid Research Institute (EUA), the Universitat de Barcelona, CIBERDEM along with the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona also engaged in the research project. The outcomes of the research were published publicly in the Clinical Nutrition journal.

Two cans of sardines per week

The study registered 152 patients elderly 65 years and elderly diagnosed using prediabetes (blood sugar levels between 100-124 mg/dl) in three distinct main Care centers. Each of these patients was set to a nutritional program that hunted to decrease the threat of these developing the disease, but just the intervention team added 200 g of sardines to their diet each week (2 cans of sardines in olive oil). To ease this intake, and thanks to this Alicia Foundation, these research participants obtained a listing of recipes such as canned sardines. Participants were advised to consume the sardine entire without eliminating the bones because these are especially full of calcium and vitamin D.

Of the group which didn’t include sardines in their daily diet, 27% of those members were at a higher risk of suffering from diabetes (measured through the FINDRISC poll ). After one year, 22% saw themselves in precisely the same category. Of the team that comprised hens in their daily diet, 37% of those members were at a higher risk of suffering from diabetes at the beginning of the analysis. Following one year, only 8% stayed at a higher risk. Improvements were also found in other significant biochemical parameters, like a diminished insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), improved”good” cholesterol (HDL). These improved hormones accelerate the breakdown of sugar (adiponectin) and decrease triglycerides and blood pressure. 

The research was completed on participants aged 65 and over because the prevalence of diabetes is a lot higher in older people than in young people: “As we age, restrictive diets (in terms of calories or food groups) can help prevent the onset of diabetes. On the other hand, the cost-benefit ratio isn’t always optimistic, as we discovered in other research”, said doctor Rizzolo. “But, the results lead us to feel that we can get an equally important preventative effect in the younger people.

The protective role of food, but maybe not of supplements

The simple fact that foods like sardines – that are full of Taurine, Omega-3, Vitamin and Calcium D – possess a clear protective influence against diabetes doesn’t follow that taking these supplements in isolation will have precisely the same impact. “Nutrients may play a vital role in the prevention and therapy of several unique pathologies, but their result is generally brought on by the synergy which exists between them along with the food that they are included. Sardines will consequently have a protective component since they’re abundant from the above nutrients. In contrast, nourishment obtained in isolation from the shape of supplements will not function to the identical extent”, maintained Rizzolo.

Scientists have started analyzing the impact of hens on the intestinal microbiota at another stage of the analysis because it impacts the regulation of several biological procedures. We will need to know if they’ve played a part in this protective effect against diabetes two, she added. They also have pioneered studies on the modulation of the expression of particular genes associated with inflammation, which might play a part in the onset of diabetes and several other ailments.
