Minister of State for Education Sanjay Dhotre launched the Rapid Antigen Test Kit for COVID-19, developed by IIT Delhi. Researchers at IIT Delhi, led by Dr Harpal Sing, professor at the Institute’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering, developed the Rapid Antigen Test Kit.

This kit can be used to in vitro detect SARS-CoV-2 antibody. SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Test is a colloidal-gold enhanced double antibody sandwich immunoassay that can be used to qualitatively determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the nasal, throat, and deep sputum samples. We can use it for screening the general population and diagnosing COVID-19.

This invention relates to an in vitro diagnostic tool for the qualitative detection of SARS/CoV-2 coronavirus antibodies in the nasopharyngeal sample using rapid immunochromatographic methods. Monoclonal antibodies that are specific for the Coronavirus antibody are used to identify the Coronavirus antigen. These results are qualitative and can be seen with the naked eye.

SARS-CoV-2 positive specimens produce a distinct colour in the test area, which is formed by the specific antibody-coloured conjugate complex” (Au-SARS CoV-2 Ab-(SARS CoV-2 Ag-(SARS CoV-2 Ab)). This coloured band is absent in the test area, indicating a negative result. The control area serves as a procedural control, and a coloured band appears regardless of whether the specimen contains SARS/CoV-2.

This test is suitable for Ct values between 14 and 32 with a Sensitivity of 90%, Specificity of 100%, Accuracy- 98.99% and Accuracy of 98.99%. It has been certified by the ICMR. These values are among the highest available for any test kit. Dr Harpal Singh explained that the technology and manufacturing of this kit are 100% indigenous.

Sanjay Dhotre, MoS, stated, I am sure this technology will revolutionize COVID testing availability in the country. I am happy to learn that the kit was developed entirely using IIT Delhi’s internal resources. He also stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government focuses on Atmanirbhar Bharat through research, development and innovation.

Research in National Education Policy, National Research Foundation, and other initiatives such as PM Research Fellowship will help improve the quality of research within our country. Technology is an essential factor in wealth creation. IITs, which are the premier technology institutions, play an essential role in this area.

He also asked the top institutes to increase the vibrancy of their research centres and innovation areas and foster industry-academia links. He asked scientists and technologists to publish more about science technology to make science and technology more popular among the general population. He also requested that they give lectures to the general public and venture into popular science fiction and nonfiction writing.

Dhotre stated that there would be mechanisms to allow regular interaction between IIT students and professors and vice versa to encourage school students to pursue science and technology.

Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, spoke on occasion. He stated that IIT Delhi had launched in July 2020 a Rs. The 399 RT PCR Kit, which has helped bring the RTPCR test cost down to its current level, is the 399 RT PCR Kit. Over 8 million PPE kits have been shipped using the Institute’s technologies.
